Leukoplakie van hetmondslijmvlies is een premaligne afwijking.Met de termen ‘premaligne’, ‘precancereus’ of ‘potentieelmaligne’ wordt bedoeld dat er een verhoogd risico is op het ontstaan van een kwaadaardige (=maligne) verandering. Van alle leukoplakieën gaat ongeveer 1-2%/jaar over in een plaveiselcelcarcinoom. Dit percentage is inderdaad sterk verhoogd vergelekenmet het ontstaan van een plaveiselcelcarcinoomin klinisch normaal uitziendmondslijmvlies. door prof.dr. Isaäc van derWaal
