Lichen planus, ook kortweg lichen (Griekse leichen = boommos) genoemd, is een ontstekingsachtige afwijking van de huid- en/of slijmvliezen, gekenmerkt door het optreden van huidpapels en/of witte, streepvormige verhevenheden op de slijmvliezen. De in de literatuur vermelde prevalentie varieert van 0,5-2%. Evenals de etiologie van lichen van de huid is de oorzaak van orale lichen planus onbekend. door prof.dr. Isaäc van derWaal
