Abstract
This paper presents a taxonomy, aimed at identifying possible sources of stagnation or obstacles in therapy processes. The system encompasses five possible sources of stagnation: 1 different kind of concerns in life (symptoms and complaints, interpersonal, existential), which may mistakenly have been ignored on the one hand, or overvalued in therapy on the other hand, 2 (too much) incongruence and/or excessive complementarity between the content and command/relationship messages exchanged by the patient and the therapist, 3 therapist’s countertransference reactions that may interfere with treatment progress, 4 an imbalance (too much or too little) in time that has been spent in the exploration or discussion of particular topics (e. g., metacommunication), and 5 outdated and/or inappropriate treatment goals. The taxonomy is illustrated by two case examples.
