Abstract

This inaugural lecture is about psychotherapy in relation to science, the mental health care work field, and education. Scientific research over the past decades was heavily focused on specific interventions and treatment protocols and its active ingredients. In contrast, relatively little attention was spend on the so-called therapist factor, i. e. the influence of therapist characteristics and skills on the effectiveness of psychotherapy. However, there are indications that the therapist factor is responsible for 5 to 9 % of the treatment effects, which is – compared to other predictors of treatment effectiveness – a significant effect. In this inaugural lecture the characteristics of effective therapists are reviewed. Next, the position of the psychotherapist in the Dutch mental health care is discussed, with a plea to position the psychotherapist as one of the specialists of the health care-psychologist, next to the clinical psychologist and clinical neuropsychologist. Finally, it is discussed how the training to become a psychotherapist can be improved. It is important that future psychotherapists primary learn to apply interventions correctly and also that they maximize their personal therapist effectiveness.
