Samenvatting
In dit artikel wordt het begrip schaamte beschreven als een zelfgerichte emotie, aan de hand van een uitgebreid literatuuroverzicht over de aspecten en facetten van schaamte. Schaamte is een krachtige, veelal negatieve zelfgerichte emotie die verbonden is met de evaluatie van het zelf of de identiteit: je bent wie je niet wilt zijn. Schaamte is niet alleen een intrapersoonlijk maar ook een interpersoonlijk proces. Uit angst voor afwijzing schamen wij ons voor onze gevoelens en voor onszelf. Omdat schaamte ontstaat in de interactie met anderen, kunnen relaties met anderen ook een belangrijke rol spelen in het leren omgaan met en verminderen van schaamte. Groepspsychotherapie biedt hiertoe veel mogelijkheden. Uiteengezet wordt, aan de hand van praktijkvignetten, hoe schaamte zich kan manifesteren in groepspsychotherapie en hoe daarmee omgegaan kan worden. Schaamte heeft de neiging zichzelf te verbergen. Om schaamte in de groep te kunnen bespreken, zullen we haar eerst moeten ontdekken. Tevens wordt aandacht besteed aan de schaamte van de psychotherapeut.
