Gedrag en sociaal functioneren bij jongeren met downsyndroom: een onderschat probleem?

Behavior and social functioning of adolescents with down syndrome: an underestimated problem?

Samenvatting

In deze studie is de mate van probleemgedrag en sociaal functioneren onderzocht onder jongeren met downsyndroom. Hiertoe is een cross-sectioneel onderzoek uitgevoerd in een landelijk Nederlands cohort van 16–19-jarigen met downsyndroom. Ouders van een kind met downsyndroom dat werd geboren in 1992, 1993 of 1994 zijn via de Stichting Downsyndroom gevraagd een schriftelijke vragenlijst in te vullen over hun kind. De vragenlijst bevatte de gestandaardiseerde lijsten ‘Sociale redzaamheid voor zwakzinnigen’, ‘Child Behavior Checklist’ en ‘Vragenlijst voor inventarisatie van sociaal gedrag van kinderen’, en aanvullende vragen over hun functioneren en achtergrondkarakteristieken. De uitkomsten werden vergeleken met beschikbare normdata van leeftijdgenoten zonder downsyndroom. Van 322 jongeren met downsyndroom (gem. leeftijd 18,4 jaar; range: 16,8–19,9) werden gegevens verkregen (respons 63 %). De gemiddelde totaalscore voor probleemgedrag was hoger bij jongeren met downsyndroom in vergelijking met leeftijdgenoten zonder lichamelijke of verstandelijke beperking (26,8 vs. 16,5; p < 0,001). De helft van de jongeren met downsyndroom had een probleemscore in het grens- of klinisch gebied op een of meer subschalen, veelal op het vlak van sociale en denkproblemen. Mannelijk geslacht en/of ernstigere mate van verstandelijke beperking was geassocieerd met meer gedragsproblemen. Negen van de 10 jongeren met downsyndroom hadden meer problemen met sociaal functioneren dan hun leeftijdgenoten zonder downsyndroom, met name op het gebied van oriëntatie en sociaal begrip.

Uit dit onderzoek blijkt dat jongeren met downsyndroom veel problemen ervaren in hun gedrag en hun sociaal functioneren. Er is dringend aandacht nodig voor het opsporen en zo mogelijk behandelen van dit probleemgedrag bij kinderen met downsyndroom.
