Kwaliteit van leven bij epilepsie: zijn het de aanvallen of is het de aanpassing?

Epilepsie is een veelvoorkomende aandoening die grote invloed heeft op de betrokkene en diens omgeving (Baker et al., 1997). Patiënten met deze ziekte voelen zich vaker dan gezonde mensen onbegrepen, gestigmatiseerd en in een sociaal isolement. Bovendien zijn ze vaker werkloos (Jacoby, 2008) en plegen zij tevens vaker zelfmoord (Christensen et al., 2007). Epilepsie heeft niet alleen psychische invloed op het leven van de patiënt, maar gaat ook gepaard met lichamelijk risico, zoals valpartijen, verdrinking en brandwonden. Patiënten kunnen zich onzeker voelen omdat het optreden van de epilepsieaanvallen niet te voorspellen is.
