Zelfmoord is een tragische dood die vaak voorkomen kan worden. In de meeste gevallen ligt een psychiatrische stoornis ten grondslag aan zelfdoding. Zo’n stoornis verklaart echter niet alles, zo blijkt uit biologisch onderzoek. Zelfmoord heeft zo zijn eigen, deels onbekende, profiel. In dit artikel vat ik het (neuro)biologische onderzoek naar zelfmoord samen. Hoewel de laatste jaren zeker vooruitgang is geboekt, staat dit onderzoek nog in de kinderschoenen.
