Summary

Chlamydia trachomatis infection is important as it is the most common sexually transmitted disease. Maternal infection during pregnancy is related to premature labour and to perinatal complications. Perinatal infection may lead to conjunctivitis or pneumonia, which occurs several weeks after birth. However, after transmission in utero, respiratory problems may occur shortly after birth, with an atypical onset and complicated course. This case report describes a preterm neonate with respiratory insufficiency associated with Chlamydia trachomatis pneumonia. We emphasize early diagnosis and empirical treatment in newborns with inexplicable respiratory distress shortly after birth to prevent serious respiratory complications.
