Samenvatting
Deze kwalitatieve studie geeft inzicht in de manier waarop eigenbelang van ouders een rol speelt in het digitaal mediagebruik van kinderen in verschillende leeftijdscategorieën. Er zijn 31 semigestructureerde interviews afgenomen onder vaders/moeders met kinderen van 3 t/m 16 jaar, geworven via een doelgerichte steekproeftrekking. Er is zowel een deductieve als een inductieve inhoudsanalyse verricht. Vormen van eigenbelang die ouders noemen variëren van ‘ongestoord andere taken kunnen doen’, ‘me-time hebben’, ‘ervoor zorgen dat kinderen zich gedragen’, ‘confrontatie vermijden’ en ‘zelf digitale media kunnen gebruiken’ tot ‘samen qualitytime doorbrengen’. Ouders van jongere kinderen stimuleren digitaal mediagebruik vaker actief uit eigenbelang door mediagebruik bij hun kinderen te initiëren of door vaste momenten te kiezen waarop hun kinderen digitale media mogen gebruiken. Ouders van oudere kinderen stimuleren vooral passief uit eigenbelang door niet in te grijpen bij (intensief) digitaal mediagebruik. Interventies gericht op het verminderen van schermtijd van kinderen kunnen gebruikmaken van deze kennis.
Abstract
This qualitative study gives insight into the role of parents’ self-interest regarding children’s digital media use in different age groups. We conducted 31 semi-structured interviews with mothers and fathers of children aged 3–16 who were recruited via targeted sampling. A deductive and inductive content analysis was applied. These analyses revealed that parents’ self-interest regarding children’s digital media use includes ‘being able to do other tasks without being pestered’, ‘having some me-time’, ‘managing children’s behaviour’, ‘avoiding discussions’, ‘occasions to use digital media themselves’ and ‘spending quality time together’. Parents of younger children stimulate digital media use more actively for their own convenience by initiating digital media use or having structured periods during which children are allowed to use digital media. In contrast, parents of older children make use of children’s digital media use more passively by not intervening. The findings can be used to inform interventions aimed at reducing children’s screen time.
