Abstract
The Self-Sufficiency Matrix (SSM) is an instrument designed to assess the degree of self-sufficiency of adults. In addition to the SSM, a Supplement Parenthood (hereafter, ‘Supplement’) was developed to assess the extent to which parents are self-sufficient in taking care of their minor children. We studied the psychometric properties of the SSM and the Supplement using data derived from an intervention for vulnerable households. The internal consistency of the 15 life domains, including the four parenting domains, was good. The Supplement therefore appears to be a valuable addition in measuring the concept of “self-sufficiency” of adults with minor children. Furthermore, the inter-rater agreement was adequate for some domains, but for some life and parental domains this was rather weak. Professionals found that all relevant issues relating to parenting are discussed in the Supplement; aspects they did find missing will be evaluated in the development of a revised edition of the Supplement.
