Abstract
In two studies with the same survey population we examined the use and effectiveness of various self-regulation strategies on the recovery of self-esteem after a shameful experience. 533 children aged 10 to 13 years at twelve regular elementary schools participated in the studies. In study 1, the children were asked for their opinion on the use and effectiveness of defensive and compassion self-regulation strategies. In study 2 we tested in an experimental setup whether self-compassion and positive self-statements are more effective than a defensive self-regulation strategy. The results support the beneficial effect of some self-regulation strategies and the lack of effect of the defensive strategy. Children with healthy self-esteem tend to make use of a compassion self-regulation strategy unlike children with vulnerable positive self-esteem (study 1). Positive self-statements are more effective than defensive strategies, and this is true to a lesser extent for self-compassion for the recovery of self-esteem (study 2).
