Samenvatting
Goed en voldoende slapen is belangrijk om normaal te kunnen functioneren tijdens de wakkere fasen. Ouders melden tijdens de raadpleging op het consultatiebureau vaak dat hun jonge kinderen problemen met slapen hebben. Slaapproblemen kunnen een nadelige invloed hebben op de ontwikkeling, het gedrag en de groei van het kind, en op het algemeen welbevinden van het gezin. Om de betekenis hiervan te begrijpen is enige kennis van de fysiologie, slaapregulatie en ontwikkeling van het slaapgebeuren vereist. Bij het adviseren en helpen van ouders moet voldoende aandacht besteed worden aan het soort slaapproblemen, steeds rekening houdend met ouder- en kindfactoren, zoals temperament van het kind en de interactie tussen ouder en kind, en omgevingsfactoren, bijvoorbeeld slaapcultuur, slaapomgeving en schermgebruik. In dit artikel wordt aan de hand van een narratieve review een overzicht gegeven van de normale ontwikkeling van de slaapduur en -structuur op jonge leeftijd en van de meest voorkomende slaapproblemen. Daarnaast worden er voorstellen voor een aanpak daarvan geformuleerd. Dit overzicht zal gebruikt worden als achtergrondinformatie bij de opleiding van medewerkers van consultatiebureaus van Kind en Gezin.
