Nitrofurantoïne schiet vaak tekort bij mannen met cystitis

Samenvatting

Mannen met cystitis worden in Nederland bij voorkeur behandeld met nitrofurantoïne. Deze therapie faalt echter relatief vaak, mogelijk omdat de prostaat ongemerkt geïnfecteerd is of vanwege resistentieontwikkeling. In een retrospectief onderzoek had nitrofurantoïne in een kwart van de episodes onvoldoende effect en dit percentage steeg met de leeftijd. Het is daarom aan te bevelen om mannen met cystitis die behandeld worden met nitrofurantoïne een vangnetadvies mee te geven. Er zijn antibiotica met lagere faalpercentages, al hebben die ook hun nadelen.
