Samenvatting

Het syndroom van Lemierre is een zeldzame, maar zeer gevaarlijke complicatie van een faryngitis of tonsillitis en treft vooral gezonde tieners en jongvolwassenen. Ongeveer een op de vijf huisartsen komt dit syndroom eens in zijn carrière tegen. Er bestaan weinig specifieke voorspellende symptomen in de beginfase van het syndroom. Vroege herkenning is dus niet eenvoudig.
