Kenmerken van familiaire hypercholesterolemie zijn hoge lipidenwaarden en hart- en vaatziekten op jonge leeftijd. De aanbeveling in de NHG-Standaard Cardiovasculair risicomanagement om FH actief op te sporen is terecht: statines zijn zeer effectief bij deze groep.
