Suïcide is een van de belangrijkste doodsoorzaken onder adolescenten in Nederland. De prevalentie is laag en de impact op betrokkenen groot. De huisarts is als gezinsarts en poortwachter bij uitstek geschikt om na te gaan welke adolescenten een verhoogd risico op suïcide vertonen. Hiertoe is een goede kennis van de risicofactoren voor suïcide nodig. Een eerdere suïcidepoging en psychische klachten, in het bijzonder depressie, zijn de belangrijkste risicofactoren voor suïcide. Een goede informatie-uitwisseling met andere hulpinstanties is onontbeerlijk voor een compleet inzicht in de risicoverhogende factoren die bij adolescenten een rol spelen. Omdat veel adolescenten met psychische klachten zich aan zorg onttrekken of zich met aspecifieke somatische klachten op het spreekuur melden is het belangrijk dat de huisarts een proactieve houding aanneemt. Bij de verdenking op suïcidaliteit is het aan te bevelen dat de huisarts suïcide bespreekbaar maakt.

Suicide is a major cause of death among adolescents in the Netherlands. Although the prevalence of suicide is low, the impact on those involved is huge. General practitioners, as family doctors and gatekeepers, are ideally suited to identify those adolescents at increased risk of suicide. This requires a good knowledge of the risk factors for suicide, the most important being an earlier suicide attempt and psychological problems. A good exchange of information with other health professionals is essential in order to obtain a complete picture of potential risk factors. Moreover, because many adolescents with mental health problems do not seek medical attention, or visit their GP with non-specific physical symptoms problems, it is important that GPs are proactive. If a GP suspects suicidality, he or she should try to encourage the patient to talk about suicidal thoughts and plans.
