Endometriumablatie kan uitkomst bieden voor vrouwen met hevig menstrueel bloedverlies bij wie medicamenteuze behandeling of een hormoonhoudend spiraaltje (LNG-IUD) onvoldoende effect oplevert. De nieuwste soort ablatiebehandeling, Novasure®, vindt plaats in 90% van de ziekenhuizen in Nederland. Bij hevig menstrueel bloedverlies is zowel Novasure® als het LNG-IUD in diverse opzichten succesvoller gebleken dan medicamenteuze behandeling. Het is van belang dat huisartsen vóór verwijzing voorlichting geven over (contra-)indicaties. Ook moeten ze hun patiënten erop wijzen dat buikpijnklachten of aanhoudend bloedverlies na de ingreep bij eenvijfde van de vrouwen een reablatie of een uterusextirpatie noodzakelijk maakt. Na ablatie is postmenopauzaal bloedverlies nog steeds een alarmsignaal voor een endometriumcarcinoom.

Endometrial ablation is performed when excessive menstrual bleeding is not relieved by drug therapy or a levonorgestrel intrauterine device (LNG-IUD). The newest procedure for endometrial ablation, NovaSure®, is now performed in 90% of Dutch hospitals. Both Novasure® and LNG-IUD have proven more successful than drug therapy in the treatment of excessive menstrual bleeding. It is important that general practitioners tell patients about indications and contraindications before referring them to a gynaecologist. Patients also should be told that abdominal discomfort or persistent blood loss after the intervention can necessitate re-ablation or hysterectomy in about 20% of women. Blood loss after ablation in postmenopausal women remains an alarm signal for endometrial carcinoma.
