Stoppen met roken is een cruciaal onderdeel van het behandelbeleid bij COPD: het vertraagt de achteruitgang van de longfunctie en het verbetert de prognose. Maar ondanks de overduidelijke relatie tussen roken en longklachten lukt het een deel van de rokers met COPD niet te stoppen. Een deel van hen geeft de huisarts foutieve informatie over hun rookgedrag. In deze beschouwing bespreken we de mogelijke oorzaken daarvan en geven we manieren hoe om te gaan met jokkende patiënten met COPD.

Stopping smoking is a crucial part of COPD management: it slows the deterioration of lung function and improves the prognosis. However, despite the clear association between smoking and pulmonary symptoms, some smokers with COPD do not succeed in stopping smoking. In addition, some of these patients give their general practitioner incorrect information about their smoking behaviour. This article discusses possible reasons for this and ways to cope with these ‘fibbing’ patients.
