Als patiënten in acute toestand op de spoedeisende hulp komen, is er vaak niet genoeg tijd om afspraken omtrent niet reanimeren of andere behandelbeperkingen te bespreken. Aan de hand van drie casussen houden wij een pleidooi voor het tijdig bespreken en vastleggen van enige behandelbeperking. Daarmee kunnen onnodig lijden voor de patiënt en onnodig hoge kosten voor de samenleving voorkomen worden.

Owing to the acute nature of the conditions for which patients come to the emergency department, there is often not enough time to discuss a do-not-resuscitate order or other treatment restrictions with patients and/or their family at presentation. On the basis of three cases, we make a plea for the timely discussion and clear documentation of any treatment restrictions, in order to prevent unnecessary suffering of the patient and high costs for the community.
