We maken ons met reden zorgen over de houdbaarheid van ons zorgsysteem, maar het is te eenvoudig om daarbij alleen aan de stijgende kosten te denken. De wijze waarop wij tegen zorg aankijken, speelt een doorslaggevende rol. Om de zorg houdbaar te maken moet men daar rekening mee houden. Het begrip ‘toegevoegde waarde’ in de zorg verdient een nieuwe definitie, en dat vergt collectieve betrokkenheid van patiënten, politici en zorgverleners. De oplossingen vormen een samenhangend pakket dat steunt op vier pijlers: schep (en heb) geen onrealistische verwachtingen van het systeem, laat de voorschrijver wacht houden, zorg dat de patiënt niet langer een klant is maar een betrokken co-maker wordt, en beloon kwaliteit in plaats van kwantiteit.

Huisarts Wet 20u;55(u):558-6i While the sustainability of health care is a cause of concern, it is too simple to think solely in terms of rising healthcare costs. How health care is perceived is a major de- terminant and should be taken into consideration when attempting to make health care sustainable. The term 'added value' needs to be re-defined with respect to health care, and this will involve the collected involvement of patients, politicians, and healthcare professionals. The solutions form a cohesive whole that is based on four aspects: do not create or have unrealistic expectations about the system, let the prescriber monitor costs and needs, ensure that the patient is no longer a client but an involved co-decision-maker, and reward quality rather than quantity
