Abstract
Quartero AO, Bartelink ME. Swallowing problems. Huisarts Wet 2012;55(8):360-3.
Swallowing problems (dysphagia) form a heterogeneous group of conditions with a very different aetiology, diagnostic investigations, treatment, and prognosis. In most cases a good anamnesis will suffice for a differentiation between possible diagnoses. While the general practitioner can treat some of the underlying conditions, referral to secondary care is often necessary, which makes it important to distinguish between oropharyngeal and oesophageal dysphagia, and between a mechanical and neuromuscular origin. Patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia should be referred to an ear-nose-throat doctor, those with oropharyngeal dysphagia of neuromuscular origin should be referred to a neurologist, and those with oesophageal dysphagia should be referred to a gastroenterologist. Dysphagia caused by medicine or peptic disorders can be treated in primary care, as can dysphagia in patients who have had a stroke, and dysphagia in a palliative care setting.
