Abstract
Beijer S, Van Binsbergen JJ. Nutrition in cancer. Huisarts Wet 2011;54(11):608-11.
It is essential that patients with cancer have an optimal nutritional status in order to enable them to withstand treatment, ward off complications, and improve their quality of life. When confronted with patients with unintentional weight loss, general practitioners tend to focus on the primary diagnosis and forget nutritional aspects, yet malnutrition occurs in more than half of the patients with cancer, even in those who maintain or gain weight. Difficulty eating, metabolic disturbances, and lack of physical activity, singly or in combination, have a substantial impact on the muscle mass. Many patients and carers are uncertain about what constitutes good nutrition, and this is something that general practitioners should anticipate. Nutritional interventions differ per patient and are dependent on the type and stage of cancer and the type of treatment. In general, it is important to screen for signs of deterioration of nutritional status and to emphasize the importance of nutritional intervention in combination with physical activity.
