Abstract
Stalpers LJA, Verhoeff JJC. Radiotherapy. Huisarts Wet 2011;54(10):554-9.
Radiotherapy is one of the three pillars of cancer treatment, alongside surgery and chemotherapy. One third of patients receive radiotherapy as first curative treatment, and another third receive palliative radiotherapy when cure is no longer possible. Radiotherapy is being used increasingly often because its results are getting better: a better chance of cure and fewer side effects. This is mainly due to improved imaging techniques (CT, MRI, and PET) and more precise radiation delivery techniques (stereotaxic, IMRT, IGRT), but is also due to increased use of multidisciplinary treatment regimens involving radiotherapy in combination with surgery, chemotherapy, or targeted therapy. In addition, side effects can be managed better, although they are still not negligible. General practitioners have an important role in detecting and treating side effects.
