Al zolang ik deze column in H&W schrijf, koester ik het plan om ooit het begin te gebruiken van een gedicht dat Isaak da Costa rond 1890 schreef. Het boeide mij in de derde klas van het gymnasium en is mij altijd bijgebleven. Da Costa was een bekend dichter die om allerlei redenen vijfentwintig jaar niets publiceerde. In mijn romantische fantasie heb ik altijd gedacht dat hij depressief was geweest. Daarna kwam hij, na al die jaren, zo fabelachtig terug:
