Diabetes mellitus type 2 en kanker

Samenvatting

Patiënten met diabetes mellitus hebben een verhoogd risico op kanker in vergelijking met de algemene bevolking. Daarnaast is de prognose van patiënten met diabetes en kanker slechter dan bij patiënten met kanker zonder diabetes. Afhankelijk van de kankerspecifieke prognose en de wensen van de patiënt moet besloten worden hoe actief een strikte glykemische controle (HbA1c) en bijbehorend cardiovasculair risicomanagement moeten worden nagestreefd. Tijdens de behandeling van kanker kan glucoseregulatie worden bemoeilijkt door gebruik van glucocorticoïden, bijvoorbeeld prednison of dexamethason. Daarnaast hebben antidiabetica, zoals metformine, een antikankereffect. Onderzoek moet nog uitwijzen op welke wijze deze middelen kunnen worden ingezet.
