Antimicrobiële resistentie: vechten tegen de bierkaai?

Samenvatting

Nederland is niet gevrijwaard van de dreiging van toenemende antibioticaresistentie. Vooralsnog is het voornamelijk een dreiging en worden de meeste uitbraken letterlijk en figuurlijk in de kiem gesmoord. Surveillance van antibioticagebruik en -resistentie blijkt zeer nuttige informatie op te leveren, alsmede de richtlijnen van de primair betrokken beroepsgroepen. Extra inzichten zijn echter nodig in de mechanismen van selectie en in de verspreiding van resistentie, evenals een scherpere begeleiding van het gebruik van antibiotica in de Nederlandse zorg, en in de landbouwsector. Omdat veel van de resistentiedreigingen vanuit het buitenland op ons afkomen, is een gecoördineerde Europese aanpak in overeenstemming met het WHO-beleid aan de orde.
