Abstract
Reoperation of cardiac surgery (RCS) is linked to higher mortality and morbidity than the first operation partially due to increased technical difficulties and the risk of injuring vital structures during the surgical reentry. The use of contrast-enhanced electrocardiogram (ECG)-gated cardiac computed tomographic (CT) angiography can mitigate the risk of surgical reentry during RCS by providing a detailed preoperative structural evaluation. As a result, in 2010 the Appropriate Use Criteria of the American College of Cardiology rated this application of cardiac CT angiography as an appropriate use of this technology. In the present manuscript we reviewed the current role of cardiac CT for surgical guidance in patients undergoing redo of cardiac surgery.
