Earth System Governance: A New Paradigm in Global Environmental Politics

Zusammenfassung

Aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse belegen, dass das gesamte Erdsystem aufgrund menschlicher Tätigkeiten außerhalb des Normalzustands der vergangenen 500.000 Jahre operiert. Eine der zentralen politischen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit ist es daher, die menschliche Entwicklung mit der des gesamten Erdsystems überein zu bringen und stabile soziale Institutionen aufzubauen, die eine langfristige Koevolution natürlicher und sozialer Systeme gewährleisten. Dies ist die Herausforderung der Erdsystem-Governance. Dieser Essay erläutert das Konzept der Erdsystem-Governance und skizziert die Grundzüge des Earth System Governance Projects.

Abstract

Recent scientific findings suggest that the entire earth system operates outside the state that was common over the last 500,000 years. The central political challenge of our time thus is to bring human development in line with the exigencies of the earth system, and to create and strengthen stable social institutions that guarantee a long-term coevolution of natural and social systems. This is the challenge of what is described here as earth-system governance. This essay explores the notion of earth system governance and sketches the outline of the Earth System Governance Project.
