Abstract

Heritage is usually approached with a focus on its constituent set of objects or on the legitimating discourse. Thus, identifying these narratives and classifying heritage is an essential part of its identity and its preservation for future generations. The heritage addressed in this article is revealed within a geoscience narrative and has specific features of attribution and value recognition. The aim is to propose an inventory and quantitative valuation methodology for ex situ geological heritage, based on its importance to science and scientific communication. Thus, using methodologies found for inventory and valuation of this type of heritage as a basis, a new methodology is proposed using the Museu da Geodiversidade (Museum of Geodiversity) (MGeo/IGEO/UFRJ) and its heritage in the Memórias da Terra (Memories of Earth) exhibition as a case study. The proposed methodology has 11 criteria that assist in the analysis of value for popularization and 8 criteria that assist in the analysis of scientific value for collections (exhibition value or collection value). The methodological proposal was tested on 12 items from the exhibition, these being 3 meteorites, 3 rocks, 3 minerals, and 3 fossils. Quantitative values were obtained at the end of the application, which, when analyzed, satisfactorily show that the presented proposal can and should be applied to collection or exhibition objects and, thus, assist in the enhancement of the museum’s scientific communication. Inventory and valuation are, therefore, essential for the exhibition stage of heritage items, especially from the perspective of museums since these institutions also have an educational and communicational nature.
