CME instructions: Myocardial 123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine imaging in hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy

Statement of Need

The following gaps in knowledge have been identified in clinical practice demonstrating the learner’s need to acquire the skills and strategies presented in this CME activity.
  1. 1.

    The evaluation of the functional status of cardiac sympathetic innervation on 123I-MIBG imaging has never gained wide clinical application.

  2. 2.

    SPECT 123I-MIBG imaging allows the assessment of cardiac regional sympathetic heterogeneity, a parameter of possible clinical impact in different pathological conditions.

  3. 3.

    While relevant alterations of cardiac sympathetic tone associate with left ventricular hypertrophy, the causal interaction between these two entities has still to be defined.
