Abstract
By 2030, the number of new cancer cases in Germany will increase from the current level of around 500,000 to 600,000 new cases per year. Worldwide, the cancer incidence will rise dramatically due to higher life expectancy and the increase in unhealthy lifestyle factors. This poses major challenges for healthcare systems. Primary cancer prevention is the only way to curb the rising incidence. In addition, through early detection (secondary prevention), cancers can be detected at a stage where, in many cases, they are curable with methods already available. Cancer prevention research and translation of the results into evidence-based application must therefore be understood as a global task in the future. In Germany and many other countries, this potential is currently insufficiently exploited. Significantly more investment and innovative concepts are needed to develop cost-effective and efficient prevention services and to sustainably reduce the number of new cancer cases and deaths. With the National Cancer Prevention Center, German Cancer Aid and the German Cancer Research Center are establishing a model comprehensive cancer prevention center pilot institution. In a multidisciplinary, translational and integrative approach, excellent preventive research will be combined with educational and training offers as well as public relations and policy advice under one roof, and made accessible to all citizens via nationwide outreach programs and network building.
