Abstract

Local antibiotics and antiseptic gels or solutions are proven therapeutics in the treatment of inflammation and diseases in oral and maxillofacial medicine. Whereas antiseptics are used as prophylaxis for preventing and also in the treatment of inflammatory events, local antibiotics are only used for treatment of inflammatory infections. Due to a narrow spectrum of effectiveness local antibiotics are often combined with antiseptics or with other active agents, such as anti-infective gels or solutions, local anesthetics and glucocorticoids to strengthen the therapeutic effectiveness. By the localized administration of antibiotics and antiseptics, inflammation in the oral and maxillofacial region can be prevented or treated.
