Abstract

The longstanding, sometimes passionately discussed controversy over the indications for apicectomy with apparently irreconcilable viewpoints between endodontology and surgery, has led to considerable uncertainty in therapy decision-making for one of the most common surgical interventions in dentistry. For this reason the German dental scientific societies under the lead management of the German Federal Dental Association have produced S2 guidelines on the indications for apicectomy, which were finalized and published in 2007 after a prolonged consensus process. This article gives a brief overview of the methodological aspects and problems with production of the guidelines and also presents the German guideline recommendations for evaluation of indications.
