Abstract
Hypoxia is a hallmark of many pathologies including solid tumors. In basic research, analysis of hypoxia by light microscopy became feasible through development of genetically encoded reporters. However, the dependence of many fluorescent proteins on molecular oxygen for fluorescent maturation limits their use in hypoxic tissue. Overcoming this limitation, a family of hypoxia-sensors based on the oxygen-independent fluorescent protein UnaG was developed in the research group of Friedemann Kiefer.
