Abstract
Cyanobacteria are photosynthetically active organisms like plants and algae, but their cell structure is less complex and they can therefore be changed more easily. The elucidation of the biosynthetic pathway for oil in cyanobacteria in 2020 will now enable new strategies for biotechnological oil production in microorganisms. Due to the simpler possibility of genetic modification and their photosynthetic activity, cyanobacteria are ideally suited for the biotechnological production of oil.
