Abstract
Myxobacteria display complex social behaviours including formation of multicellular, spore-filled fruiting bodies. Recent research provided fascinating insights into the processes underlying these social behaviours, including intra- and intercellular signalling, motility and its regulation, and cell cycle control. These analyses also show that Myxobacteria are a rich source for the discovery of novel molecular and cellular mechanisms. VAAM (Association for General and Applied Microbiology) therefore chose Myxococcus xanthus as the Microbe of the year 2020.
