Abstract

The acetylation of the Nɛ-amino group of lysine residues is a long-known post-translational modification of proteins. Initially discovered on histones many more lysine acetylation sites have been found throughout the proteomes of several organisms. This article focuses on past and present discoveries of the function and abundance of this evolutionary highly conserved protein modification.
