Abstract
Microalgae offer a very diverse and also economically attractive product spectrum which gives them the potential to become a relevant organism group for biotechnology beyond fundamental research. Besides the already established processes for the production of coloring agents and poly-unsaturated fatty acids, further value products such as bioactives for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals could be promoters for the economic production of bulk or low-value products such as biofuels and animal feed.
