Abstract
The lower extremity is the commonest part of human body that may develop chronic venous insufficiency as the outcome of venous hypertension. The prevalence of this condition in Indian population has not been studied yet. The factors responsible for venous hypertension may be congenital, idiopathic or secondary. These cause changes in venous haemodynamics due to alterations in venous flow and lead to development of venous hypertension. Individuals with venous hypertension often seek treatment advice only when the condition reaches advanced stage of chronic venous insufficiency. These patients need to be thoroughly evaluated clinically and by using appropriate investigations. The choice of investigation and its correct interpretation depends on in-depth understanding of altered haemodynamics. The treatment modalities available are surgery, endovenous procedures, supportive treatment and management of complications. The appropriate modality needs to be chosen and tailored to suit every individual diagnosed to have venous hypertension. The health care workers need to be aware of measures to prevent or contain development of chronic venous insufficiency.
