Critical Limb Ischemia in a 17-Year-Old Patient

Abstract

High-flow vascular malformations include arteriovenous malformations and congenital arteriovenous fistulas. Arteriovenous fistulas are characterized by a direct connection between an artery and a vein. Congenital arteriovenous fistulas are rare lesions and occur in the central venous system and the extremities resulting to ischemic complications distal to the arteriovenous shunt and ulceration. The diagnosis is primarily based on history and physical examination, but duplex-ultrasound scanning and magnetic resonance imaging are the preferred imaging modalities for the assessment of this entity. Schöbinger and Yakes staging systems have been used widely to classify the malformations according to the clinical effects and the angioarchitecture, respectively. We present a rare case of a young patient, who presented with critical limb ischemia due to high-flow congenital vascular malformation and was treated via endovascular embolization.
