Growth Rates for Potatoes in Latin America in Comparative Perspective: 1961–07

Abstract

Despite being the center of origin for the potato, Latin America now lags behind Africa and Asia in annual growth rates for the crop amongst developing country regions. This paper attempts to answer two basic questions: What were the principal trends in growth rates for potato production, area, and yields in Latin America over nearly the last half century? In light of these developments, what are the prospects for the commodity in the region in the years ahead? After calculating growth rates for potatoes and other major food crops utilizing FAO data, the paper analyzes the evolution of regional trends in potato production based on those figures. A synthesis of previous publications then aims to explain the principal contributing factors to these growth rates for the major potato-producing countries in the region. The paper concludes by presenting alternative scenarios for development of the potato sector in the region, outlines a case for the more likely of these, and identifies some key topics for future socio-economic research.

Resumen

A pesar de ser el centro de origen de la papa, las tasas de crecimiento para dicho cultivo en América Latina han sido más lentas que ellas en África y Asia en las últimas décadas. Este estudio intenta contestar a dos preguntas: Qué eran las tasas de crecimiento principales para la producción, área y rendimiento para la papa y los otros cultivos alimenticios principales en América Latina por casi el último medio siglo? En base de esas tendencias, qué son las perspectivas para el cultivo en los años que vienen? El documento analiza la evolución de las tendencias regionales para la papa en base de cálculos de las tasas de crecimiento utilizando los datos de la FAO. Después, una síntesis de estudios anteriores intenta explicar dichas tendencias para los países más importantes en términos de producción de papa en al región. Se concluye con una presentación de dos escenarios alternativos para el desarrollo del sector papa en la región, se indica los argumentos a favor de uno de ellos, y se identifica algunos temas clave para futuras investigaciones socio-económicas.
