Abstract

Abundant wild populations of Phaedranassa carmiolii Baker (Amaryllidaceae) were discovered in the Zona de Los Santos region of central Costa Rica. This is the first discovery of this species growing in the wild in Costa Rica. The few previous collections of the species were all prepared from cultivated plants. A detailed morphological description and photographs of the species are provided. Finally, aspects of the ecology, natural history and conservation status of the species are discussed.
