Seven new species of Dacryodes from western Colombia. Studies in neotropical Burseraceae XXI

Abstract

Seven new species of Dacryodes (D. amplectans, D. connata, D. epimedia, D. frangens, D. hydrifolia, D. maguipensis, and D. tumacensis) are described and illustrated, bringing the total number of species occurring in Colombia to 28 (nine of them still undescribed). Eleven of these are restricted to the Chocó flora sensu lato, making that a center of diversity for the genus. One of the new taxa, D. connata, has a partially sympetalous corolla; this is unique in the genus and suggestive of Trattinnickia, but sympetalous and apopetalous congeners occur elsewhere in the family. Recent molecular work suggests that neotropical Dacryodes are monophyletic but the genus is paraphyletic; far more robust sampling is needed for resolution of generic limits and circumscriptions as well as for understanding patterns of distribution and ecology.

Resumen

Se describen e ilustran siete nuevas especies de Dacryodes (D. amplectans, D. connata, D. epimedia, D. frangens, D. hydrifolia, D. maguipensis, and D. tumacensis), elevando el número total de especies en Colombia a 28 (nueve de ellas aún sin describir). Once de estas especies hacen parte de la flora del Chocó sensu lato, convirtiéndose en el centro de diversidad del género. Uno de los nuevos taxa, D. connata, posee corola simpétala; característica única en el género que podría sugerir afinidad con Trattinnickia, aunque en otros casos dentro de la familia ocurren congéneres con corola simpétalas y apopétalas. Estudios moleculares recientes sugieren que las especies neotropicales de Dacryodes son monofiléticas y que el género es parafilético; haciéndose necesario un muestreo más robusto para resolver los límites genéricos y circunscripciones, así como para la comprensión de los patrones de distribución y ecología.
