Summary

The pantropic weed known as Synedrella nodiflora (L.) Gaertn. (Compositae: Heliantheae: Ecliptinae) is based on Verbesina nodiflora L. Previous type citations of the Linnaean name are in error since the material cited was not acquired by Linnaeus until three years after he published the name in Centuria I. Plantarum. The name is now lectotypified based upon the illustration of Bidens nodiflora, folio tetrahit in Dillenius’s Hortus Elthamensis. A discussion of the original material available is provided and why some was discounted as suitable lectotype material.

I would like to thank Dr Charlie Jarvis for the occasional discussions we have had on this, and other, Linnaean lectotypifications, together with confirmation that Sloane’s herbarium material could only be used to confirm the correct identity of the material depicted in the illustration in Sloane’s work. We are all deeply indebted to him as well for his scholarly work in the production of Order out of chaos. The author would also like to thank two anonymous reviewers for their comments on the original draft of this paper.
