Summary
The type specimen of Metrosideros regelii is discussed. It contains a mixture of two species, representing different genera, and a lectotype is chosen. The generic position of the species is considered in the light of morphology and recent molecular evidence and the new combination, Mearnsia regelii, made.

Acknowledgements
I am very grateful to the Director of Kew for the invitation to attend the ‘World Checklist of Myrtaceae’ workshop in February 2005 and to Eimear Nic Lughadha and Eve Lucas for facilitating my visit. My thanks to the Director of CANB for access to collections in that herbarium, and also to Tony Bean (BRI) and Jim Ross (MEL) for answering queries about types in their respective herbaria.
