Abstract
The introduction of e‑cigarettes was accompanied by various expectations on this form of nicotine consumption, the scientific data basis of which are discussed. Hopes for a harmless nicotine use for consumers and ambient air and at the same time hopes for the ideal mode for smoking cessation were contrasted by concerns over early use of e‑cigarettes by children damaging their health and seducing youngsters to early nicotine consumption. There was also the concern over a possible “normalization” of conventional tobacco consumption negating the efforts of decades for protection of nonsmokers. The relatively short market presence of e‑cigarettes allows only tentative conclusions based on scientific data to be drawn. The legal classification of e‑cigarettes in relation to tobacco cigarettes concerning advertising, legal age of consumption and restrictions of use in no-smoking zones as outlined in the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) will play a decisive role in whether initial hopes and concerns will materialize in the future.
