Abstract
Low patient adherence to prescribed medication is a major challenge in osteoporosis. Research often focuses on causal factors such as treatment characteristics, but very little on patients’ perceptions and beliefs about therapies. This study aims to explore the impact of specific therapies on how patients evaluate potential risks and benefits, on their perceptions of the disease and pursuing treatment, and the overall impact on their emotional well-being. A sample of 152 women with PMO completed a survey including the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ), the Beliefs About Medicine Questionnaire (BMQ), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS). Uncertainty, anxiety, and depression were the strongest nodes and were shown to play major roles within the networks. Patients’ beliefs about the harmfulness of medications in general were strongly associated with individual necessity-concerns assessments. Whether their prescribed PMO therapy was taken orally or by injection or supplementation had different impacts on patients and influenced both personal perceptions and necessity-concerns assessments. A person’s emotional state may also govern how these factors relate to each other. Our results remain exploratory but highlight the need for a more personalized approach to managing PMO that considers the nature of the treatment.

Notes
Note. The harmful aspects variable is often confusing in its interpretation. This variable will be replaced by harmfulness to reflect the beliefs of individuals about the harmfulness of medications in general, and not related to treatments prescribed for osteoporosis.
The value of the maximum difference in edge weights of the observed networks.
The difference in global strength between the networks of the observed data sets.
