Abstract

Despite the evidence of cross-cultural validity regarding the Dark Triad traits' internal structure, there are still questions to be answered related to the Dark Triad traits. We intended to inspect the Short Dark Triad's psychometric properties and conduct a network analysis on a Romanian sample. Relying on a large Romanian sample (N = 4134, 2855 women, 69.06%), we conducted a network analysis of the SD3 items, tested the factorial structure of the SD3 measure, its measurement invariance across sex, and determined the IRT parameters of the SD3 items. The network analysis indicated that, for women, the tendency to affiliate with important people is the Dark Triad's central component. The other central component is related to revenge-seeking. For men, the behaviors associated with revenge were central to the Dark Triad, followed by seeking important people partnerships. We found that the factorial structure of the measure resembles a great extent the original one. Further, the Dark Triad traits were invariant across sex. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
