Abstract

Emotion regulation may play a role in the intrapersonal and interpersonal disturbances associated with pathological narcissism. The purpose of this study was to explore relationships between emotion regulation strategies and pathological narcissism among a large and diverse sample of college students (N = 1301). Narcissistic vulnerability was associated with greater use of intrinsic affect-worsening emotion regulation strategies, while narcissistic grandiosity was associated with greater use of intrinsic affect-worsening, intrinsic affect-improving, and extrinsic affect-improving emotion regulation strategies. Emotion regulation strategies may play a role in the psychological fragility of vulnerable narcissism and the maladaptive compensatory responses of grandiose narcissism.
